How to use your Crucial X8 Portable SSD with your computer
With more photos, videos, music and larger games than ever before, our need for more storage has grown – if you’re an avid gamer, designer, photographer, or business professional, you’re probably familiar with the need to either extend your storage or backup your data. Using your Crucial X8 with your computer
Step 1. Connect the X8 to your computer
First, connect the included USB cable into the end of the Crucial X8 drive. Plug the other end into either a USB-C port on your computer. If you don’t have a USB-C port on your computer, you’ll need to use the included USB-C to USB-A adapter included in the box.
Note: Make sure when using the USB-A adapter, that the alignment marks on the adapter match up with the alignment mark on the cable. If these marks are not aligned, your computer won’t detect or work with the drive.
Step 2. Check that the drive is working with your computer
For Windows, you should be able to see and access your X8 in File Explorer. Once in File Explorer, you should see under “My Computer” that the “Crucial X8” drive is present. You can then go into your drive and move, copy, or delete files. To get the most out of your drive – like learning how to setup your computer to back-up your files to the drive, navigate to the “Crucial X8” drive and open the “x8-support-website.url” file included on the drive, which will open up an internet browser to visit our support website – http://www.crucial.com/support/X8
For macOS, you can use Finder to locate your X8 portable SSD. Once you locate your drive in Finder you can move, copy, or delete files. To get the most out of your drive – like learning how to set up your computer to back-up your files to the drive, navigate to the “Crucial X8” drive and open the “x8-support-website.url” file included on the drive, which will open up an internet browser to visit our support website – http://www.crucial.com/support/X8
Step 3. Disconnecting your X8
The Crucial X8 is portable and can go with you – wherever you travel. When the time comes, you need to disconnect your X8 properly to ensure you don’t lose any data.
- For Windows, look to the lower right Notification area of the taskbar. You can select the up arrow which will expand the icons in the systray. Right-click the Eject media icon (looks like a USB thumb drive), prompting a list of removable media devices will be displayed. Select the X8 and eject the SSD after seeing a default message stating it is safe to remove the hardware.
- For Mac OS, there are two ways to safely disconnect your X8 portable SSD:
- First, you can find the X8 icon on the desktop. Select it, then press the command button and the “E” key simultaneously to eject the X8.
- The second method is to use Finder, located on the left side of the window. Find the X8 SSD under devices. At that point, all you need to do is select the eject icon to the right of the X8 SSD.
