Identifying compatible storage upgrades for your system can be a challenge as SSDs are available in multiple form factors. As technology gets slimmer and more lightweight, 2.5-inch SSDs are often too large for cutting-edge systems.
The M.2 form factor is a much smaller SSD that’s about the size of a stick of gum and designed to deliver the near-instant performance of an SSD in space-constrained tablets and ultrabooks. However, it's not compatible with every system.
In addition, there are two interfaces available in the M.2 form factor; SATA and PCIe. These interfaces look very similar, and in some cases, either will work in a computer, but not every computer has the capability to accommodate both interfaces.

M.2 FAQs
Will a Crucial M.2 SATA SSD work if I have a PCIe connection?
Maybe. Many PC manufacturers configure the M.2 connection to use either a PCIe or a SATA interface. The motherboard automatically configures the correct protocol.
It's important to note that an M.2 SATA or M.2 PCIe SSD will fit into a PCIe slot, but an M.2 PCIe SSD will not fit into a slot dedicated to M.2 SATA SSDs.
It's best to consult your user manual or the Crucial® Advisor™ tool or System Scanner tool to ensure that you are ordering the correct part.
Will a Crucial M.2 SSD work in my Mac® system?
No. According to Apple® manufacturer specifications, Mac systems are not compatible with Crucial SATA M.2 SSDs.
Are single-sided and double-sided M.2 SSDs interchangeable?
No. Single-sided M.2 sockets on the motherboard support only single-sided M.2 SSDs. However, double-sided M.2 sockets support both double-sided SSDs and single-sided SSDs.
